I was wondering how many spells does a fighter get? Also, how many extra spells does the fighter get when he levels?

I read the Player's Handbook about the Fighters spells.

Fighters don't get spells, they get Exploits. They are all considered "powers"

Which Player's Handbook are you reading and where does it say they get spells?

Spells, powers, whatever... close enough.

4.0e Handbook, Your powers are called exploits. Some work better for great weapon fighters and some work better for guardian fighters, but you can choose any power you like when you reach a level that allows you to choose a new power. The choice of weapon you make also provides benefits to certain fighter powers.

They get the same number as everyone else, starting with 2 at-wills, 1 encounter and 1 daily at 1st level.

Fighters get the same amount of powers as everyone else. At 1st level, they get 2 At-Wills, 1 Encounter, and 1 Daily. Check the XP table near the front of the PHB.

There is a chart on page 27 (? i think. i don't have the book handy, but it's after the races and before the classes - somewhere in there) that shows many powers all characters get at different levels.

all the classes follow that same progression.
(though some classes and races get little extras. like humans get a bonus at-will, or several classes get a bonus racial encounter power, etc. those exceptions are listed in the individual race or class entry)

Let's be fair here... his board name might indicate he's a former 7th Sea player, and anyone who's played both knows there's a hell of a difference between the two games.
