They took you concentration and your bonus action to do less damage than divine smite. While for two sorcerer points you could use booming blade or green flame blade as a bonus action. At lvl 17 you're tradding 2d6 (greatsword) + 3d8 (booming blade) + 5 (15 if have great weapon master) +4d8 if target moves. Free concentration and can use divine smite if attack crit. For:2d6 + push target IF he fail in ST and your concentration. You don't need many 1st level spells. You only need paladin (level 2 to 6 or 7), metamagic and many spellslots.</blockquote>
