D&D 4E Weapons in 4e Reminiscent of the Old Weapon Mastery Rules...

Anyone remember the old Weapon Mastery rules from D&D Basic?

I don't remember a lot about them, but I remember that different weapons gave you different "abilities" when you mastered them...

There was a big ol' complicated looking list in the Rules Cyclopedia...

Maybe I'll take a look when I get home.

Actually the PHBII weapon mastery feats made me think of basic D&D's weapon mastery rules. I don't remember anything in the Cyclopedia about special maneuvers with individual weapons, but it's been a long time (I wonder where my Cyclopedia went... I don't have it anymore).

It wasn't huge... it was like a full page footnote thing... (which is what made it confusing to me I think...)

The D&D weapn mastery rules turned up in the master set and later in the rules cyclopedia.
Every class could learn different ranks of mastery with a specific weapon (fighter got th most choices of course), there was a flat to hit bonus with each degree of mastery but the weapon damages and ranges varied with degree of mastery. dependign on the wepon itself (along with degree of mastery) one gained access to a variety of special manuvers and improved defense. It's 1 page of rules and 2 pages of charts.

Considering the small number of weaposn in that version of D&D it wasn't so bad, if 4e has as many weapons as 3e and they get similar coverage then we are looking at a whole lot of pages and the MU's page count ratio in the PHB is going tohave to shrink to make room.
