Specially in the ancient (greek, babylonian, assyrian, etc),  But the 2 handed spear were used as well. And once the Middle Agges started to develop, spears lost it value. Billmen, halbaldiers, and other polearms (including pikes) were developed instead, because a single hand spear thrust wasn't really able to pierce through new armor.</blockquote>
