I had a player attempt to use a web spell upon a flying adult black dragon, arguing that his head and his tail consitituted the opposing points on which to anchor the spell. I disallowed this, but it was a point of contention.

Going from memory, I'd say you ruled correctly, but IDNHMBIFOM.

You ruled correctly. The web will just collapse in a useless mess about the dragon, like silly string.

Ruling otherwise would mean that you could legitimately web a humanoid by specifying the anchor points as their head and their feet.

These masses must be anchored to two or more solid and diametrically opposed points or else the web collapses upon itself and disappears.
