Spoilers Wednesday S2

Legend
So the long-awaited second season of Wednesday is now out. Or the first half of it at least.

I’ve watched the first two episodes so far. Really enjoying it!

They waste no time revealing Wednesday’s stalker.

Lots of cameos, including Haley Joel Osment as a deranged serial killer and Christopher Lloyd (who played Fester in the movies alongside Christina Ricci) as a head-in-a-jar professor.

Billie Piper plays the new music teacher, while Steve Buscemi is the new school principal. He gets a “hello, fellow kids” moment in ep 1.

I understand Lady Gaga is going to have a cameo in the second half. (And Joanna Lumley will be playing Morticia’s mother.)

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who looked uncomfortable playing Morticia in S1, seems to have settled into her role nicely now. I’m still not sure about the casting for Gomez, but then it’s virtually impossible to fill Raul Julia’s shoes, so …

I’m liking the side plot with Pugsley and the zombie, but I suspect it will end up being less of a side plot and more part of the main plot by the end.

Anyone got any theories about the crows?

I would have been more than happy for a John Astin style Gomez, as that's what I grew up with. Luis Guzman just doesn't hit the notes for me.

I'm thinking that the crows will have something to do with Ophelia, as they name drop her in every second scene.

Ok, having binged the first four episodes, wow, what a lot of spinning plates!

We have fallout from season one, a sleazy new pyrokinetic principal (played to perfection by Steve Buscemi). Wednesday's sudden popularity, which has spawned a fan club of sycophants, one of whom has a stalker-ish crush. Morticia's Mom (the ever-great Joanna Lumley)! The lost-Aunt Ophelia! Experimentation on "outcasts"! Clockwork zombies! Bird-controlling Avians! Wednesday clashing with Morticia (part deux!). Some new faculty, including Billie Piper and Christopher Lloyd! Surprise roles by Haley Joel Osment and Anthony Michael Hall!...My God, it's full of stars!

Add to that Pugsley's struggles to fit in, Enid's woes of the heart (including feeling distanced from Wednesday, her "ride or die"), and Thing really pulling his weight- a disembodied hand with no speaking voice is really one of the best characters, how does that work?

Oh and we get Christina Ricci back...possibly for the last time.

There's a lot of different plots going on here, and it's turning into the cinematic equivalent of a twenty-car pileup...you just can't look away (and that's a good thing in this case)!

A few lingering questions:

Ok, what's up with this subplot about Nevermore needing money? There's no shortage of students, and most of them (I thought) were having their tuition paid, with only a few scholarships. And there's some very wealthy outcasts!

Related to this, why can't Gomez just bail the school out? We've seen that he has vast amounts of wealth, as every one of his crazy business decisions pays off!

If their special abilities are seen as so prized, why are they "outcasts" to begin with? I honestly hate that this is a term that's used, as if they were mutants in the Marvel universe- people always thought the Addamses were damn odd, but it just feels weird that they can be lumped into this apparently well-known group of individuals.

And also, just by looking at the students of Nevermore- do all Outcasts have abilities? They certainly seem to! Which begs the question of what, exactly, Gomez's power is...

I still think making it a monster school show was a mistake. It doesnt allow Wednesday to be special when everyone is peculiar and powered and murders and zombies eating driving instructures is a regular evening..
We end up with a X-Men Academy (or rather Miss Peregrins School) with a murder mystery plot.

That said I accept this show is pitched at a much younger demographic than I and admit I was entertained by the first 2 episodes, even if I'm iritated with Emma Myers character 'development'.
The new redhaired pollyanna is adorable however (and already has some horror cred!).

I thought the naming of Caliban hall was inspired and helped to sell Guzmans take on Gomez as a caliban. Pugsleys actor might be a bit too nice looking to pull that off though.

Im guessing the crows tie-in to aunt Ophelia, especially as we know Morticians mother is soon arriving.

Also looks like another Principal isnt going to last more than a year at Nevermore

Yes, I will say I preferred the 90s movies' take of the Addams Family being the weird ones in a world full of normies. However, I do think this show still does a reasonably good job of making them stand out from the other outcasts.

They get special treatment (like Wednesday's custom all-black uniform) and other outcasts find them weird or annoying (like how Eugene doesn't appreciate that Uncle Fester eats his bees and is only rooming with Pugsley because Wednesday made him).

Yeah, the Addam's have an interesting reputation- on the one hand, they're Outcast Royalty. On the other hand, even other Outcasts are like "um, something's not quite right with these people". Like everyone's reaction to what they consider "food" lol.

Which gives me an idea for something I'd like to see- a fake documentary of an Outcast film crew stalking the family to show the secret lives of the Addam's clan. I know, it's been done!

But it would still be entertaining.

I think it could work as like a single episode of Wednesday -- like a one-off Halloween special that's not connected to any of the main plots -- but I'm not sure I'd want a whole series like that. It would probably end up feeling too much like What We Do in the Shadows.

In the original series the Addams Family thought they were normal and that's part of why it worked.

You'd have 'normal' people interacting with a creepy and kooky family who think every household has a torture chamber, that having a serial killer in your family tree is something to be proud of, and eye of tadpole (preferably blue-eyed tadpole, although black-eyed will do if those are out of stock) is what you serve to guests as a snack.

And they were a legitimately kind and thoughtful family, it's just that their values were not those of mainstream society.

And also, just by looking at the students of Nevermore- do all Outcasts have abilities? They certainly seem to! Which begs the question of what, exactly, Gomez's power is...
I think the showrunners missed an opportunity by limiting Nevermore to monsters and people with superpowers.

Have actual outcasts there! Kids who got ostracized for one reason or another are rubbing shoulders with monsters and people with superpowers who otherwise would fit in in mainstream society.

Just have Gomez Addams have been someone who went to Nevermore because people thought he was weird.

I completely agree. The Addams Family needs to be surrounded by 'normal' people to contrast them with.

I'm reminded about the old joke about Goths hanging out together so they can be more individual that way.

Yeah, thats what doesnt make much sense to me - the school is made up of vampires, werewolves, male medusa, sirens, witches and other monsters, so what are they eating or doing in the night? Are these sparkly vampires rather than bloodsucking monsters?
At least during season 1 Weems had them trying to appear normal, this year the Principal is going all in on being Outcasts but in doing so the script has their outcast nature played down, except for a nice visual effect.

Are the Addams royalty? They are certainly very rich and influential and at least that would explain why they get away with doing things and why Wednesday is permitted to wear black when all the vampires and even the schools 'queen bee' - a mindcontrolling siren - must wear the standard purple uniform.
