I am currently playing a Monk in 5E to test them out and I am not a fan of the class on a conceptual level. Cheesy monks based on Kung Fu movies from the 70's while the Sun Soul Monk is Street Fighter II/DragonballZ. I usually use the monk ki points to spam 4 attacks a round (level 6) and attempt to knock people prone via dex saves. My monk is the way of fist monk or the honoured "Foot in Ass technique" as he explains it I am playing a LG comedian Wood Elf (don't ask). Think Johny Cage nut punch attack from Mortal Kombat. Anyway the DM givie us an encounter vs some angry peasants. Fireballing the lot of them are not an option and there are a large number of them between them and a misguided NPC Paladin/Cleric types. With speed 50 I move 8 squares and use a ki point to use the disengage option, charge straight through the gaps, get between the Cleric and Paladin, stun the Paladin as he rolls a 1 on his saivng throw. stun him as well. Stun also equals incapacitated which means.... No charisma save to the nearby cleric either so I try to stun him as well and fail. Eventually the Barbarian is up wailing on the Paladin and the stun wears off. Monk eats two smites and has 2 hit points left out of 47. AC 19 did not save me, DM rolled high. Monk beats a retreat, wizard uses the healer feat on him for 1d6+10 hp (14 regained). Monks turn again and charges back into the fight. NPC cleric type flame strikes us, rolls rubbish. Barbarian is resistant to all damage except psychic in a rag, Monk makes a dex save and nature cleric use dampen elements. A massive 4 points of damage goes through and we clear house. So yeah took a large amount of damage which gets promptly healed and sucked the tempo out of the DMs encounter. We played through he DMGuild temple of the night bringers adventure and I ended up the a Mask of Shar which lets you short rest as an action(more ki points+HD based healing) and give you a +1 bonus to hit for an hour. It has some sort of drawback I might find out about the hard way. The mask and +1 short sword are my magical items. Just get in there is the philosophy.
