40 hours of free overtime in a year? Sure, I do that. That's less than one hour a week on average. In 2013 I put in 40 hours of unpaid overtime, every single month of the year. It was a big project and I did get a sizeable bonus when it shipped. Some jobs pay so well and you love the work so much that you don't even care. Doing one hour a week OT I could do in without even batting an eye. I do that now, without even being asked. So do lots of people. Not saying that's a good thing, but it's up to each person to estimate the value of their salary and consider if they reduce it by the lost overtime pay if they are still getting well paid for the work they do, and if it's worth it to continue doing that. Giving away "free" swag is a tax-deductible marketing expense for these companies, they aren't doing it our of the kindness of their hearts, they've analyzed the return on investment and figured the good will generated will pay off. If Wizards doesn't have something cheap enough to give away in their D&D product line without it being a net loss to their bottom line, that's that. D&D is not an expensive hobby. It's time preparing adventures (and wasted on forums!) that's the real expense. If you can't afford a PHB just borrow a friend's. It's literally free to play.
