So I don't know how many of you LARP, or MMO as well as table top game, but I assume some cross over. I ask because the new HBO series is some strange mix of the three. It's called west world and it's based on a 70's movie. The basic concept is that there is a vacation resort somewhere in the future where you go to play out your own fantasies. The theme of the in game world of the resort is a western. It's kind of but not really a historic setting, but more based on a game world view of a western. So as I was watching I do a review show on youtube (shameless plug for "The heart of the stories we tell") However I couldn't stop thinking of this as an RPG as I made my episode 2 review (https://youtu.be/9maMJX7vc64). Anyway without going too much into spoilers there is a speech at the end of the 2nd episode, and I think it very much is a D&D DM thought process. I figured I would get some thoughts from you guys though. Sir Anthony Hopkins is the creator of the in story game, and he explains each "Adventure" needs to do more then shock and twist, and it doesn't need to tell the player who they are, they already know that, but it should tell them who they could be. So that thought has been bouncing around in my head today. As much as west world itself is fun as an idea, on a meta level can we take statements like that and make ourselves better DMs?
