Westerns

I would think that a toned down version of Deadlands D20 would be an excellent system for that. It's already got the supernatural edge to it. I think most of the books are available in PDF on RPGNow.

The subject of Westerns in one of the other threads had me thinking...

I think a Call of Cthulhu game in that sort of setting would be a blast!

I agree with the Cthulhu idea -- there's plenty of material in the core rules to do it too. I'd be happy to play or GM.

I'll have to check it out.

I was really thinking in terms of a traditional western with a very fluid sort of class system. Actually, cthulhu on steroids and a modified skill set might work nicely.

Adventures could involve train robberies, indian attacks, kidnapping, bandits, claim jumping, cattle rustling, horn swaggling, lily livered, no-account low down snake! DRAW VARMINT!

Wow! This idea excites me A LOT. I would love to Cthulu in the Wild West!

When you gonna run that for us, Bob? :p

I'll play an undead cowboy and give a new meaning to the term "Pale Rider".

Robert E. Howard wrote a lot of weird Westerns, as well as a few standard and even a bunch of comedic Westerns. His weird, horrific Westerns are fantastic stuff.

As a fan of Louis L'amour books and Clint Eastwood Westerns, I'd even go for a more standard Western game, but I do have to admit toward a certain inclination for adding the weird and horrific to it.

IIRC, the non-d20 CoC rules, by Chaosium, have rules for 1890's, 1920's, and 'modern' play. I'd think you could probably just use the 1890's skill lists and equipment guide and put together a cowboy game pretty easily. It's a little on the tail end of what some would consider the 'Wild West' era, but close enough for gaming.
