RPGs really don't pay that well except for those who have long time customer bases or a lot of money they can already sink into the project. Most D&D fans specifically don't buy third party content. You have to remember, D&D is touted by WotC a few years ago to have 10+ million players, and they're now a billion dollar company whose books churn a lot of money on Amazon. Even with some Kickstarters crossing a million, that's still not a even a sliver of the amount of money any first party book makes. Its a few orders of magnitude different. So, anyone who makes anything for 5E (myself included) is essentially licking the sweat off the footprints WotC leaves behind for the rest of us. Ed making 5000 off that book alone last year is a lot better then a looooooooooooot of other RPG developers get. For every En World or Kobold Press, there's 30 Shardstone Assembly's. 'Tis the nature of the game.
