I'd go with items that have the potential to drive the campaign forward. This can be especially fun if there's a meaningful way of increasing the item's power when the character is higher level. - Heirloom ring (requires attunement by member of bloodline): Comes with a small box (jewelry box size) that only opens to the touch of the ring when worn by someone of the given bloodline (DC 20 to pick or break open). Tradition holds that the ring was originally intended to secure several vaults/caches the contents and locations of which have been lost to memory; so much so that most family members dismiss it as grandpappy's senile ramblings, thus why the character has it without oversight. - Resplendent surcoat (requires attunement by member of bloodline): This heraldric device was fashioned in better times when your family served as the personal retainers for a now fallen line. Anyone loyal to you or your liege gains advantage on saves versus fear while they are within 60 feet and can see you. Because your family was dismissed from its post prior to the liege-line falling (and because they objected to the course of action that led to the fall), it is possible that the coat may bring other fringe benefits. At DMO, you may need to cleanse association with your ancestral liege-line, first. It's even possible that finding service to a new, worthy liege may reveal additional powers. - Earrings of unveiling threats (requires attunement): These earrings allow the wearer to understand thieves' cant. Additionally, the wearer gets benefits that help her avoid plots against her. First, she has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to overhear conversations about her. Second, she can make a Wisdom (Intuition) check to understand the full meaning of any conversation about her in a language she does not normally speak -- the wearer only gets this insight about what is being said about her, so if she is captured by gnolls who intend to ransom her but eat her elven companion, she will only know about the ransom. Note that neither of these benefits apply to to speech directed at the wearer, only to conversations in the third person that exclude the wearer, whether intentional or not (e.g. If the wearer is hiding around the corner or the speaker switches languages or whispers to avoid eavesdropping). If blessed at the right temple (setting dependent) it might gain the ability to cast clairvoyance once per day at its own discretion.
