I really like the inclusion of sort of "DM Treats" by Monte Cook. A great example of this is the Jaren. Just a little bit of descriptive text on what they weem to be, and then everything else is at the hands of the DM. So what are they for you, or your campaign? For myself, I was leaning towards them being a group of lost celestials. They were brought from a different plane by the Dramojh for use in their breeding experiments but were able to escape. The problem is that the angels are completely cut-off from their own gods. They would try and serve some of the powers available, but things don't mesh well. The angels have been dragged from Planes of existence built on different rules. When the world was created for them, there was good and there was bad. There was honor and rashness. Basically, there was alignment. But as the world the Diamond Throne lacks alignment, the angels have lost the ability to tell what was good and bad. They can no longer "feel" what should be done, as the world is built upon oaths and ideas instead of absolutes. As a result of this, they've decided that they cannot exist in this world. They cover themselves in robes and masks to protect their identity from people that would seek them for worship or as some sort of link to the divine. As they themselves have been cutoff from the gods and forced to a more mortal existence, they suffer from an extreme loss of confidence when it comes to influencing and councilling others. So now they scour the world for knowledge and magic, trying desperately to find a way home. They collect Dramojh relics and knowledge, and often perform experiments similar to Dramojh ones. Since they've lost this inherent ability to decide if actions are right or not and given their obsession to return home, they can often be major villains in a campaign. Some familiar with Babylon 5 will recognize this as a pretty good adaption?... ripoff?... theft?... of the Vorlons. Well I really LIKE the Vorlons. Great power, tons of knowledge, and they fundamentally break down to a child-like need to belong. So, what are the Jaren for you?
