If only! System Shock is, as fiction, quite superior to this. And System Shock is not exactly amazing, story-wise. Re: SHODAN, [ISPOILER]The evil Dr Fell (jesus wept Adrian) isn't in the computer or w/e, the cold people are just somewhat inexplicably using an AI version of her voice to trick people, people who should like, have machines to detect that, natural skepticism of random voices on the radio and so on.[/ISPOILER] The whole thing was wild to me because he told a story with similar themes ("What is humanity, which humanity deserves to exist?") with Ogres (which was also short like this), which was insanely more effective, and has an excellent "twist" ending that makes sense, rather than the really dumb one where you expect Kodos and Kang to be hanging out and laughing! I see they're making a movie of it, and like I just don't see how that isn't an absolute car-crash panned by critics and audiences. And whoever gets cast as Dr Marx is going to have an awful role of standing around and being a useless whilst horrible (and kind of funny) things happen, in a way that's quite different to say, Jurassic Park. Even the kids in JP are more dynamic and go-getting characters than Dr Marx. I think the only way you could handle it which wouldn't be also would be to trim the story down massively (easy to do, about 80% of the book could be cut with zero impact - which is worse than Brandon Sanderson note - most of his books you could only easily cut like 50-70% with no impact at all), and focus really strongly on the horror elements, which are weak in the book, but could be played up.
