I'm still fiddling with sorcerers, but here are my current house rules: Ability Scores • Ability scores are determined using a variant point buy method: start with a base of 6 in each ability score, and distribute 38 points as you see fit on a 1:1 basis (so 14, 18, 10, 8, 14, 10 would be one possible set of stats). Apply racial modifiers normally. (Reasoning: This allows for greater customization of characters while still maintaining game balance.) Races • Half-orcs gain the following racial trait: a +2 racial bonus to Intimidate and Survival checks. Half-orcs are naturally skilled at survival and know how to use their orcish heritage to their advantage. (Reasoning: Half-orcs were a bit underpowered, and this ability also serves to make them a more interesting choice.) Classes • Paladins have the added option of being neutral good or chaotic good in alignment, using the rules from the Book of Hallowed Might. They can of course still be lawful good. (Reasoning: Monte's rules for paladins of other alignments are excellent, and they allow for some interesting options.) • Psions and psychic warriors will use the rules presented in Mindscapes. (Reasoning: In order to use the mindscape psionic combat rules featured in Mindscapes, the retooled versions of these two classes must also be used.) • Sorcerers receive (4+INT bonus)x4 skill points at 1st level, and 4+INT bonus skill points/level thereafter. Diplomacy, Gather Information and Intimidate are added as class skills, and they need not use material components (using the rules from the Book of Eldritch Might II, p. 10). (Reasoning: Sorcerers need a bit of a boost, and these changes make them a more interesting choice.) Hit Points • At every level after 1st, hit points will be handled as follows: roll for HP as normal, taking either the number rolled or 1/2 your hit die -- whichever is higher. (Reasoning: This makes for slightly tougher PCs, and reduces the amount of variation in HP gained at each level.) Skills • Perform: as noted in Arcana Unearthed (p. 86), synergies for related Perform skills -- like acting and storytelling -- are allowed in many situations. (Reasoning: With the changes made to Perform in 3.5e, this minor addition makes a lot of sense.) • Tumble: the Tumble skill in the PHB (p. 84) has been replaced with the Tumble skill presented in Arcana Unearthed (p. 89). The chart for surface modifiers from the PHB will still be used. (Reasoning: With fixed DCs and variable movement allowed, the Tumble skill was too powerful; this is taken care of in AU.) Feats • Toughness: the Toughness feat (PHB, p. 101) has been replaced by the Sturdy feat from Arcana Unearthed (p. 112). Anywhere that Toughness is listed as a prerequisite, replace it with Sturdy. (Reasoning: Toughness has always been a subpar feat -- particularly at higher levels -- and Sturdy turns it into a worthwhile choice.) Psionics • Mindscape psionic combat (from Mindscapes) will be used in place of the system presented in the Psionics Handbook. (Reasoning: Mindscape psionic combat is a huge improvement over the original system, and is much more evocative to boot.) (Edit: I dropped Spell Thematics from the sorcerer. I may replace it, I may not.)
