That is why I allow a Will save for anyone entering the area of effect of the silence spell. (Debating that ruling has already been done in another thread. Search for it if you're interested.) Here's one I used in RttToEE. (I've removed some of the details about the module.) An evil druid has had to hole up in an underground environment for awhile. He casts mud to rock and then quarries a bunch of stone blocks out of the resulting stone. He uses these quarried stones to reinforce the entrance to his home. The floor is similarly the result of a mud to rock spell. Above the ceiling he places a large bowl of water, ensuring that the water can be easily replenished. When invaders attempt to use the entrance passage, he casts dispel magic and automatically reverse the effect of the mud to rock, causing the mud to rain down on the characters. With enough quarried stone/mud, the party is entirely engulfed. The entrance way actually slopes down in the center (or uses stairways on each end), perhaps only 10 feet over a distance of 60 feet or more, but it's enough that he can cast control water and raise the level of the water high enough to drown any creatures caught in the mud, but not completely submerged (for example, a large creature tall enough to still be breathing). If the quarried stone is the result of casting multiple mud to rock spells, there's even one additional step: use a separate casting of rock to mud to create the initial mud in the first place. If the party mage tries to dispel the control water using an area effect (they likely can't use the targeted version of the spell), the mud might turn back to rock again. (This assumes that the druid uses a targeted dispel magic to turn the rock into mud, allowing the other transmutation effect to still be in place.) The druid can summon creatures to help once the party is trapped. :)
