Corbert already posted my standard answers to this, (archers with cover behind a pit trap, and the Pit trap with an iron grate and water). My most noteworth achievement in Grand High Bastardry was to have my players turn over a magical Mithral Chain Shirt to a known enemy who simply asked the players to give it to him in exchange for a metamagic Rod of Silence. The reason this worked out was as follows. 1) The enemy was a Beguiler with a Hat of Disguise Self, ranks in Disguise, and high ranks in bluff. He was disguised as an Orc Druid and within an Orcish tribe at the time. 2) The Rod of Metamagic was just a stick. The Beguiler had the Silent Spell feat and simply told them the Rod was what let him use the feat. 3) The trade happened when the players were returning from fighting a Large Black Dragon with a 7th level Ranger mounted on it, and they were in pretty rough shape. Even though they figured out the opponent was they were not in much of a position to fight him. It played out beautifully. He made the trade and started walking away from the players, but in the wrong direction. The party sorcerer thought it might be a Sivak Draconian or a person uner magical influence, and used detect magic. When he detected the magical hat, the first thing said was 'Son of a b*tch'. The sorcerer was inclined to start a fight, but things just went poorly, and another party member talked them down, though they had to pay 200 gp to keep the villain and his allies from stomping the sorcerer who started it. As a side note, the villain in question is more of a rival / worthy opponent then an evil force who must be stopped. END COMMUNICATION
