Whether you're a player or DM all of us have had those "oh snap!" moments in game where one of our well-thought-out plans, tactics, or just plain statements didn't quiiite have the desired effect/outcome. So this thread is to post you (or your group's) most "YIKES!" moments. I'll start... (I think I've used this sitch in another thread but it def. applies for this too) Playing a gnome illusionist who considered himself the authority on all things magic...the group had met an obviously superior force of drow in the underdark. Having a drow or two in the group, someone thought we should try to talk our way through...after we'd had a round or two of fighting. One of the party mages had a staff of I-don't-remember-what, but shot off a blast at one of our foes after the momentary truce had been called. When questioned by the enemy leader why she'd done so if we were truly friends and wanted to parlay for passage, her response was "It misfired." I, the player, not missing a beat, simply turned to her and said "Staves don't misfire!" She glared at me. "What?!" says I. I look to the other party members for support. They too are looking at me in shock. "What?!" again, says I, "You need to use the command word, a staff can't just go off on it's own." I look to the DM for verification, she is sitting on her DM perch with that bemused and slightly evil smirk that you nevvvver want to see on a DM's face. At which point one of the other players reminds me of our general houserule (in an attempt to focus us and diminish out-of-game chit chat) that if you say it while we're playing, your character said it. This was the days before Bluff or Diplomacy or any of that...needless to say, negotiations did not go well after that. Yikes and Oops! Yeah, we ended up having to fight our way out/through. Yike story #2: Same party. I think we were in the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth...fighting..something nasty. Might have been the behir...might have been something else. The other mage in the party had a wand of wonder (quite possibly the most Yikes-causing item ever created). The fight was not going well, but we were holding our own. The character (and player) was a mite kooky and drew his wand. Naturally, there was much groaning and we all ducked and covered. The creature was consumed in sparkley pink smoke for a few moments and when the smoke cleared, there were TWO of them!!! Total "Orko" moment. If I remember correctly, that encounter ended with much fleeing and loss of items as we all scrambled over each other to get out the small passage that led to where the creature was housed. We all survived, I think...at that point But it was definitely a BIG YIKES and we basically went to explore every possible other region before finally submitting that we had to go back there and deal with these two things if we wanted to get any further "down" into the dungeon. PS: The DM explained to us after the game was done, that the roll she'd made on the random WoW chart would have been sigNIFicantly worse for us...so she improvised. What have been some of your (from a player or DM perspective) YIKES! moments? n' Happy Green Beer Day everybody. --Steel Dragons
