What can you do when magic jarring?

hong

WotC's bitch
That is, when you cast magic jar to take over someone else.

Can you use your own Extraordinary abilities?
Supernatural abilities?
Spell-like abilities?

What about the victim's Extraordinary abilities?
Supernatural abilities?
Spell-like abilities?

Some of that is actually answered in the spell description.

You cannot actively use anything from the victim, but automatic abilities still work (like Regenerate, Spell Resistance, etc). You cannot choose to activate any of those abilities, tho, if that would be necessary to use them.

Your own spells and spell-like abilities should be available.

Not sure about extraordinary and supernatural abilities, that's probably a case by case decision, but in most (maybe all?) cases they would not be.

Uh well,... It says you keep your class. Doesn't that mean, all your class abilities as well??? Rage, Evasion and Monks AC bonus for example would make sense IMHO.

The way I read it, it's basically "Your character, different body."

In other words, bump your own Str, Dex, Con scores up to what you're taking over, give yourself all the other guy's stuff, drop your stuff, and there you have it.

By the way, is "Automatic abilities" an actual game term, or was this just made up for the spell?

Well, to give an example: if a shadow demon (BoVD) uses its magic jar SLA to possess someone, can it still use darkness at will?

It's a (Sp) that needs no material components, so I would say of course he can. It's a purely mental action. And your mind is in the other body.

But really it boils down to this simple equation:
Magic Jar + BoVD + Hong = Soon to be unhappy PCs

I don't know what you're talking about. I haven't killed anyone for at least 3 sessions.

*twitch*

On a related note, when a ghost manifests from the ethereal to the material plane, is that a standard action? Not, uh, that I'm planning on having ghosts. Nope.

Manifestation (Su): Every ghost has this ability. A ghost dwells on the Ethereal Plane and, as an ethereal creature, it cannot affect or be affected by anything in the material world. When a ghost manifests, it partly enters the Material Plane and becomes visible but incorporeal on the Material Plane. A manifested ghost can be harmed only by other incorporeal creatures, magic weapons, or spells, with a 50% chance to ignore any damage from a corporeal source. A manifested ghost can pass through solid objects at will, and its own attacks pass through armor. A manifested ghost always moves silently. A manifested ghost can strike with its touch attack or with a ghost touch weapon (see Ghostly Equipment, below). A manifested ghost remains partially on the Ethereal Plane, where is it not incorporeal. A manifested ghost can be attacked by opponents on either the Material Plane or the Ethereal Plane. The ghost’s incorporeality helps protect it from foes on the Material Plane, but not from foes on the Ethereal Plane.
When a spellcasting ghost is not manifested and is on the Ethereal Plane, its spells cannot affect targets on the Material Plane, but they work normally against ethereal targets. When a spellcasting ghost manifests, its spells continue to affect ethereal targets and can affect targets on the Material Plane normally unless the spells rely on touch. A manifested ghost’s touch spells don’t work on nonethereal targets.
A ghost has two home planes, the Material Plane and the Ethereal Plane. It is not considered extraplanar when on either of these planes.
Looks like.

When I read the title, I thought it was a brainstorm on what you can do to people with that.

Like the gnome alienist who took the body of a city functionary to get some information. He visited the chief of the city watch and talked to him. Just before he teleported out, he told the guy that he slept with his wife.

I think it really sucked to be the guy who's body he used - he didn't know anything about his luck
