Thieves' World can't be beat for 1E flavor. I picked up an ancient Thieves' World boxed set from 1981 for 85 cents. Thank God that the big chains haven't killed off all the little mom-and-pop used bookstores yet.

I don't know of any good online resource for the setting. I'll look around myself, but I'm also looking forward to what some other people will tell you.

No modules besides the intro adventure yet. There are some adventures for the old 1e Thieves' World you can still find online though. Some like them, some don't, I personally enjoyed most of them.

I thought Thieves' World was one of the best d20 books I've read in a long time and have run a great mini-campaign for it that my players are dying to get back to.

You can adjust the power of magic, allowing you to run the game as a low or medium magic game.

It's also got some nice classes, and a background system (it's basically human only race-wise).

In short, a really solid d20 fantasy campaign and a lot of good crunch.

It is the best Campaign setting out there.

anyone played it?

Yes, from first ed to second and now in third. I even played using basic D&D and we tried using TRaveler though that wasn't as good. Role master was interesting though.

are there variant rules?

The new Thieves World books are varianty from the PHB. The classes can be different, magic is very different. There are variant rules for their variant rules though if that is what you are talking about.

fantasy races?

99.99% of what you will encounter are humans. In the short stories it does talk a bit about a few non human races, but they are super rare. THe humaniod races though are very well defined and so it doesn't feel like everyone is playing just a human. THe culture and backgrouns for each character make a big difference.

is magic present? rare? commonplace?

Magic is there and kind of rare. It is really hard to master. It can be seen as more commonplace then it really is. For instance I frequantly have people selling magical items that are not relaly magical. So, NPCs and even PCs can believe that there is moire magic around because of these con men. However a true master of magic is someone to be greatly feared!! :D

have any modules been produced besides murder at the vulgar unicorn?

I hear that there is a new one in the set of combined books they are selling, but I haven't seen that. Green Ronin does have new generic modules and I had heard there would be web support to make them work for TW but I haven't seen that done yet (not that I've really been looking).

It really is a great dark, gritty fantasy world.

I'd recommend tracking down the story collections if you want to get a feel for the what a TW game would be like.
