Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival

http://www.ebertfest.com/

Every Year in April Roger comes back to his home town and hosts a great film festival at the historic Virginia Theater. I go to at least a couple of movies each year and have been known to see seven or eight movies. Some of the movies are not overlooked, but Roger brings them because he wants to :D .

Roger brings in a guest from each movie to talk about the movie and take questions from the crowd. Director, actor, writer, etc. Two people I have seen in the past were Bill Paxton (A Simple Plan), and Kris Kristofferson ( A Soldiers Daughter Never Cries) They were both very nice guys.

The past several years Roger has brought movies in 70mm format. Lawrance of Arabia, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Patton. These prints are incredibly sharp. Roger brings in a special screen and projectionists from Chicago to show these movies. For 2001 the guest was an interview via phone from Sir Arthur C. Clarke from Sri Lanka.

Another cool thing Roger does is bring a silent film each year. The Alloy Orchestra plays the score for these movies. Some in the past have been Nosferatu (1922) and Metropolis (1927)

These Festivals have brought people from around the globe to Champaign and the great Virginia Theater.

Hmm, while I was going for mainly fantasy/sci-fi inspired conventions/festivals, that's a pretty good list.

Edmonton has many other festivals like the Edmonton Boat & Sportsman Show, Northern Alberta International Children's Festival, River City Shakespere Festival, Jazz City International Music Festival, THE WORKS Art & Design Festival, Edmonton International Street Performers Festival, Klondike Days, Edmonton Heritage Festival, Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Fringe Theatre Festival, Edmonton's Labatt Blues Festival, Edmonton International Film Festival, Global Visions Film Festival, etc, etc, etc.

Not that I'm bragging or anything. :D

MIDSOUTHCON!

One of the finest small to midsize cons you'll find. There's a little bit of everything in the mix, and an incredibly dedicated batch of volunteers that out it all together.

Gaming, art, costuming, literature, approachable guests, children's programing, two movie rooms - one devoted to anime, science, board games, dealers (of course), a charity read-a-thon, blood drive, costume contest, local writing awards, and a hospitality suite with beer and high caffine drinks included in the price. All the worst problems this con has had in the past few years have (IMH and informed O) stemmed directly from the hotel itself (don't get me started; I just wrote and decided to delete a rant on this). Steve Jackson and Jolly Blackburn have been featured guests in recent years and claim to have had an absolutly wonderful time.

Plus the proceeds go to charity.

I'm a pretty big fan of MidSouthcon.
