The DM and players need to be on the same page about a lot of aspects of the game. If they are not it just leads to unhappiness at the table.I like to play in and run mature games with a lot of shades of gray. Where there are in game consequences for actions and where role playing your character's personality is as important as how well it is designed for combat.For the most part I have had the pleasure to play with like minded people.As a DM and a player I try to always remember that we are all there to have fun.
