Tonight's session went great despite being run completely off the cuff with next to no prep time. This was the second session for this group, but we only had 3 of the original 5 players. It just so happened (purely by chance) that their characters were bounty hunters looking for a mark (which is what brought them to the town in the first game so "writing them out" was easy (the mark had moved on so they followed). Long story short, the remainder players were sitting around the Sacred Pyre when a giant eagle crashed itself into the pyre, blasting away the sacred branch at the core. One player read the thongs dead mind and discovered it had been infected by The Darkness to disrupt the flame. The PCs were told about a replacement that had been hidden away and went off to retrieve it. I set an open clock for how long they had before the last embers of the old sacred branch burnt out, so they decided to set off in the dark to save time. This saved time but increased danger so they got Wayland by Darkness infected trees a la Wizard of Oz (I used giant brawler stats because I had them on hand). Tough fight but they won. They decided not to rest to keep the clock from advancing. Once at the "Vault" (a cave with a Boulder in front of it) they used tools, smarts and sweat to open it, where they discovered the "spare" sacred branch. With a devil sitting on it. I honestly don't know what made me decide to do that, but it worked out great. The devil wanted a soul for the log. You see, when people are killed by The Darkness, their souls are consumed, which has caused a bit of a currency problem in Hell. But if the devil can secure a bargain, they can yoink the soul before it gets obliterated. In the end, the noble hero that sold his soul did so for the branch, a second spare branch and the location of his ancestral weapon. The devil disappeared to "consider it" and upon returning agreed and put the hero into a seizure. During it he saw his great grandfather nearly succumb to the darkness but call out for ANYONE to help him. You can guess who did. Now the hero has an axe possessed by his grandfather, who knows the location of a sacred branch as well as the location of where he died with his sacred weapon. Looks like the one shot has become a campaign.
