Whether player or DM, I tend to prefer long term games for role-playing, and short term games for roll-playing.
Some of the groups I've gamed with over the past couple decades have had great storylines that explored the depth of the characters and the love of playacting while journeying from low level to high level. The ability to find a DM and group who can really lose themselves in their characters is challenging in my experience, but totally worth the effort.
But with so many cool options to explore, I also enjoy one-shot adventures or mini-campaigns in which I can play something like a gestalt half-dragon warlock/factotum for a few sessions to get a feel for the abilities of the class(es). OK, I admit it, I just like to play D&D!
