I didn't find it all that frustrating. Some battles did take a lot of planning and the heroic sacrifice of as many hirelings as you could muster. If you want an easier time dial back the difficulty option (reduces xp, but you should still top out by endgame.) You could also seek out the Nintendo version of the game. They reduced the difficulty quite a bit from what I've read. The orc battle with 30+ orcs in the Temple of Bane wasn't meant for 1st-level characters... it was for 2nd-3rd  Again, tough. Of course if you know you're going into a temple full of orcs, why aren't you bringing a ton of MUs and clerics with sleep, hold person and stinking cloud? You can switch out characters in PoR at the training hall, as well as recruit hirelings. Lateral thinking. Or metagame thinking, I guess, depending on how you look at it (Don't you love games where the only way to win is lose and reload?) The toughest battle(s) for me in PoR was in the kobold lair out in the wilderness. An ambush leads you into hordes of kobolds (yay for 1E fighters and sweep attacks), wyverns and a troll or two with no break between the battles. When each battle wraps up, you need to answer "No" to the question "Would you like to finish the battle?" just so you had time to heal. I wasn't able to finish the battle without this bit of cheating... 'course I could've come back a level or two later. Toughest battle ever for me was the Beholder Corps of Mulmaster. The designers said that battle was supposed to be unwinnable. If they wanted it that way, they never should've put dust of sneezing and choking in the game. Even so, it requires healthy duping of the dust, invisibility potions/spells and luck.
