It's the environment skill for underground environments. You can use it for orienteering and finding food.

You can also use it to identify aberrations.

Let me try to help:

Think about the Nature Skill. It allows you to underestand the outdoor enviroments, the weather, rivers, plants, natural creatures and so on... Think of Dungeoneering as the equivalent underground.

What kind of dangers exist underground? Is there any water in this cave? Is it fresh water? What kind of monster is that? Caverns, dungeons, underground hazzards are "study fields" of this skill. Helps you survive, forage and navigate underground.

Technically it also allows you to identify aberrant creatures.;)

Ops almost forgot: min. armor enc. means that you will never find a masterwork armos of that kind with a magic bonus lower tham that.

In our game we only use maps for combat scenarios. Non combat we use pure descriptive outlays (Big dark cavern, pool in corner, bats on roof rather that actual map of room) and the game is purely skill based. Therefore navigating is not about having a map with a token on it saying "here you are!", its about relative understanding of current situation.

This makes Nature and Dungeoneering vital skill as they represent core navigation ability. When we are underground, as the party proceeds successful Dungeoneering skill challenges represent a successful attempt to get where you are going (like the ability to navigate a labarynth) and failed ones represent stumbling into unfavorable circumstance.

Good call.

When I think of Lord of the Rings and the loooong journey inside Moria I think most published materials lack this: huge underground enviroments, even natural ones.
Most published dungeons are mere rooms/encounters connected by corridors.
I like the idea of spending a couple of days underground just navigating, even without any fighting, in the same way we do outdoors.
