What does official mean? (Dragon Mag)

Crothian

First Post
I have seen some threads about Dragon now being official, but I really have not seen anything on what that actually means. To me it seems more like a great marketing strategy then anything.

So, does official mean it is now allowed in the RPGA or the other froups like that? Does official have any meaning to the weekend gamers?

Intresting topic. One might say Offical means Core, but we all know that its just not true.

Official could also means its d20 licensed, but that too means what? That it follows some restrictions imposed by WotC?

Very very very good point Croth.

It means nothing in any tangible sense. It's a marketing gimmic ("The Official Third Edition Dungeons and Dragons Magazine!" sells better than "The Un-Official Third Edition Dungeons and Dragons Magazine!"), nothing more.

As I said on the other thread, official seems to mean authorized, in case under authorization to use the D&D trademark and logos...

it means more than compatibility (D20 System) and less than self production.

I think Dragon's also able to use WotC books outside of the Core Rules, in addition to what Nifelhein said.

Best,
tKL

That's all it means. The use of the Dungeons and Dragons logo.

To me, it means diddly. Other than the PHB, the books I use most frequently are 3rd party. And I've yet to include something from Dragon in any of my games, except maybe for a counter or two.

Thank god this thread didn't turn into the flame war that the Wotc Message board version of the topic did. Gee gads. It's nice that we're not too concerned with "officialness".

I think it means the rules are valid for use in Olympic D&D competitions.

I guess we just want to know, not impose our view, but anyway, I lack the ability to understand why people start flaming each other because of our hobby point of view...

Olympic D&D ?? Never played it... many world, but never as titans playing other characters...
