My hexblade in the freeport campaign I'm currently playing sorta fits the 16th century privateer look. He doesn't worry too much about harversacks or other normal tools of the adventuring trade since he rarely has need to leave the city. When he does however his backpack sits across a diagonal belt running opposite his bandolier containing food, a change of cloths flint and steel bits of dry kindling an extra bundle of rope a whetstone and a bedroll rolled up using the rope already around his waist. Adventuring gear: Kneehigh riding style boots (no spurs) Stilletto in his right boot (dagger doing 1d3 with no range) Dart (throwing knife) in his left boot loose fitting breeches padded undervest chain shirt linin shirt leather buffcoat bandolier holding 6 darts (fluff wise I call them throwing knives) and 4 pitons wide leather belt with a skull motif belt buckle with two daggers a hand axe with 50 feet of silk rope bundled across his back above his butt and a beltpouch containing a peice of chalk, mirror, a spare set of theives tools for his brother a letter signed by the local temple of Boccob that places him under their protection and around 20 GP 30 SP plus a fistfull of coppers Shortsword carried over the right shoulder across the back Wide brimmed leather "cavalier style" hat ankle length grey hooded cloak with a clasp shaped like a stylised dagger Halbard I always try and plan my gear on the assumption that my characters will not have access to a horse (paladins being the obvious exception) and make sure that espcially if the group lacks a ranger or druid they are capable of living out of their backpack for at least a week. I also try and ensure that I have at least 1 or 2 backup weapons since I've had too many DM's burn me by sundering weapons or me just plain loosing them. A hand axe is pretty much essential in my books even if my character can't nessesarally use it as a weapon. It can be used for anything from driving pitons to chopping firewood to a weapon in a pinch. Daggers are also sprinkled liberally about my character, even the most stringent of weapons laws usually let you carry at least one dagger (remember this is an age before culterly) and I also try to carry a few thrown weapons in addition to any more conventional ranged weapons I might have. Thrown weapons have the distinct advantage of being able to be used in one hand and beats burning a feat on quckdraw if you want a quick ranged attack before closing to hand to hand. We have a houserule that allows anything the size of a dagger or smaller to be drawn as a free action without the quckdraw feat.
