The apparent individual spearheading this, is a giant of a man decked in black armour, and wielding supernatural powers. There is another individual in charge of these armies whom is played by an elderly actor whom once upon a time stared in the old Hammer Horror Dracula movies.The youth lives a basic farm lifestyle, and often dreams of a day adventuring out into the open and wide world for the first time. A series of events of course (involving his surrogate family), insure that this indeed does take place.During the movie, the youth is given a sword which glows blue, and was once owned by an older family member who has been seduced by evil magics. At the beginning of his travels, he joins up with an old wizard (you know: white hair, beard, blue eyes, robes, wise, and able to control powers beyond those of normal men), who guides the youth throughout the movie (acting as a father figure and conscience).Although it's an entirely male group of companions, a female - in fact a princess - does join them.    Later on we learn she's in love with one of them.The film follows the companions as they - unplanned - infiltrate and travel through a multi layered expanse that means certain death if the bad guys have anything to do with it.Anyway, about halfway through the movie the hero (the youth) gets entangled by a bizarre looking water dwelling creature that seems to consist of mostly tentacle. His companions shoot at it, and eventually our hero is released. Directly after this they are almost crushed to death - but luckily they prevail.After this (and a little later in the film), there is a very rememberal scene where the hero needs to get from one side of a chasm to another, and is shot at by the bad guys who are up in higher ledges. They of course live and breach the gap, and continue to run with escape forefront in their minds.Shortly after this (a sad point), the wise old man is killed by a being consumed of evil and wielding a searing red sword. The youth is witness to this, and (not surprisingly), screams in denial.  Of course, (as comes apparent in the later two films), death will not stop the old man from returning (acted by a well known and Knighted British actor).The film (directed by an undeniably geeky and bearded fellow) has spawned calendars, toys, mugs, statues, replica weaponry, illustration books, computer games, and a role playing game. Even though the movie was released with outstanding special effects, it's the story line that is most captivating. And even though the last film in the series is yet to be released, it has a fan base and cult status that will be hard for any other movie series to beat. Accept maybe one.Full marks to the person who correctly answers  this.</blockquote>
