I can’t say I’m a fan of his, but his novelette “Sandkings” is really good- it won a Hugo & a Nebula. It was originally published in Omni magazine, then in a couple of collections, and has been adapted for visual media at least once- it was the first episode of the 1995 Outer Limits series. Supposedly, Netflix is making a new version of it. It’s almost the only thing he’s written I like. Other nerdy IP I generally ignore? I liked a few early Kevin Smith films- Clerks & Dogma for instance- but I’m at best neutral on the rest. JK Rowling’s stuff- never appealed in the first place, and her personal views & advocacy have rendered HP stuff radioactive. Frank Herbert. Liked The White Plague and Dune, but stopped that series after halfway through the 2nd book, at least in part because my Dad read the series and didn’t like it. Never got into the Wheel of Time. I bought the first book in Julian May’s Pleistocene saga in an airport & devoured it on the trip. Bought the next 3 books, but bounced off after the 2nd one in the series- 3 & 4 remain unread. The series eventually hit 9 or 10. I’d still give a TV show based on it a chance, though, and mistakenly thought a couple were for a short time. I read Battlefield: Earth under similar circumstances when the cover mentioned it was being made into a movie. Enjoyed the silliness of it, but never took it seriously. The movie was…well…😬 Another in the “picked up on a whim” category was Storm Constantine’s Wraethu. and its sequel series. It’s…special. If you don’t know it, the Wraethu are a hermaphoditic species evolved from humans, and the series details the struggle between fading humanity and the riding Wraethu. There’s a lot of questionable plot & writing decisions. TBH, reading the stories was kind of like watching a slo-mo train wreck. I also read the entire Gormengast series, and ultimately wondered why I finished it. Kind of a Charles Dickens writes fantasy vibe.
