I like to throw the insta-death stuff at them when they least expect it.  A basilisk shows up on the scene when they are weak and trashes them.  That's a better example than some flying, invisible lich lord casting disintegrate on people - which I have experienced as a player, at 5th level.  And people tend to leave those non-fun games after a while... like me (sorry tony!).Eventually everyone misses a save.  Get used to it.  How prepared you were going in doesn't matter so much sometimes as how prepared you are to get back in the game by rerolling another PC.</blockquote>
