What Hangs Out With Formians?

My PCs may soon be heading into a small colony of Formians, and as much as I dig the little antaurs, I want to give the players all something else to encounter than just waves and waves of ant-men.

My question is, what else lives in a Formian colony? I know formians keep slaves, so there'll be all sorrts of fun slaves down there, but what else? Dire bugs, any other sort of humanoids? Formians seem to tend to assimilate or destroy anything they don't particularly like, so I'm at a loss to come up with something they might allow to exist freely in their colony.

The colony will be rather small, most likely, without a queen (led by 2 or 3 myrmarchs, with a portal to Mechanus hidden within the colony). It's centered around the 60-year-old wreckage of a small explorer spaceship (I run a D&D/Dragonstar crossover) that the PCs will be there to unearth.

I'm just looking for non-formian fights/encounters to mix things up.

Any advice?

I'd just pick some monsters that have neutral alignments, and then template them with axomatic. Also perhaps toss in a few minor devils working with the formains to "help' in their take over. Imps would probably work best.

Well you could have resistance groups of the colony's original inhabitants waging war with the formorians for their home turf. Formorians are known for taking slaves, so there could be groups of escaped slaves of whatever species the formorians conquered.

I wouldn't be surprised to find an ankheg or two acting as a workhorse for digging out some of the larger sections of the colony (and to burrow up in the middle of unsuspecting adventuring parties and bite heads off of PCs).

I definetly agree some Baatezu would fit, being lawful and all. Manipulating the formians to their own ends, while appearing to help them, and in turn being manipulated themselves.
