D&D 5E What happens if you cast Meteor Swarm underground or indoors?

definitely allow it indoors. If you still want the meteor flavor just have a portal open up on the ceiling with the meteor coming through.

Reminds me of my recent game that went to 20th level. A trap set off a meteor swarm right above the barbarian.

His response?....I punch the meteor!!! Did I allow it....hell yeah I did! So I let the barb make a strength saving throw instead of a dex one. He succeeded, so I ruled that that the meteor was broken up, and its damage was halved against the other party members (who then got to make dex saves for half more).

Made that character feel like a million bucks.

Underground I might narrate it as gushes of lava explode out of the ground. Lava is hot and heavy.

For indoors, I would have the meteors crash through the ceiling (and then being an evil DM, have the building catch on fire, but that has probably happened every time the PC's and NPC's have cast a fire spell indoors, so they probably won't be surprised).

The relevant portion of the spell text is simply "Blazing orbs of fire plummet to the ground"... Nowhere in the spell does it actually state that these are literally meteors from outer space, or even magically-summoned meteors. They're just magical "blazing orbs of fire".
Thus, by RAW, they're not limited to any sort of physics applicable to meteors.
