D&D 4E What happens to dead gods in 4e?

It's not related to ZEITGEIST at all, actually. Well, except for the fact that now that I'm done writing ZEITGEIST #2, and we have other authors lined up for the next few adventures, I'm looking for something to write and pitch to WotC.

I think Nerul's old domain still exists, it's now just more decayed than ever. So I think that domains survive the demise of their deity, they just have no housekeeper anymore to do the daily shores to keep them clean

I'm particularly curious about gods that were mentioned often in earlier editions, but have never been mentioned in 4e. Is there any canon comment about their statuses?

4e canon doesn't especially follow from previous canon, so there's no way to say that any given 'old edition' god every existed...

There are a couple abandoned domains around, such as Shom, so they definitely can continue to exist long after their inhabitants 'die'. The implication exists that 'dead gods' might be revitalized in some fashion too.

Honestly I don't recall any specific canon on the subject in previous editions either. There were various situations for different dead gods as I recall.

It's tremendously difficult to kill a god.

However, in E3: Prince of Undeath, Orcus may well kill the Raven Queen. Upon doing so, he gains control of the power and kingdom of Death - with amusing results for the world.

To kill the Raven Queen, Orcus required a shard from the Heart of the Abyss.

Cheers!

What happens if Orcus wins?

The 4e Tomb of Horrors (the sequel, not the DM rewards) has some of their essence remaining around and Acecerak's plan being to steal it to effectively make himself a God. (I'm paraphrasing and might be inaccurate).
