Sometimes in the Army people are put in command of units out of need not in their particular field. I (Special Forces Officer) was given command of a Military Intelligence Unit. Soldier in MI units while sometimes smarter than others tend to over analyze even the simplest of missions and complicate things with excessive committee type decision making meetings. Heading out late one night, walking through the barracks as I did on all nights to check on the younger soldiers welfare, I overheard a couple of the NCO's talking about Star Trek - later that night I had an idea that lead to me being a very successful commander in that unit. I had been having a hard time making people in the unit understand my intent and my leadership style seemed foreign to them. I think that while they were used to one particular leadership style (Latter I described it as The Piccard Style), I because of the nature of my background did things a totally different way. (Later the Kirk Style) I simply and frankly, thinking all along that they might think me a little eccentric, started describing things to my senior NCO's that I was more used to a more directing type style like Kirk instead of the more participative style of Piccard. In that unit full of MI geeks it worked like a charm no one batted an eye about it.... From then on in the unit the question I asked all the NCO's to consider before briefing me or planning some event for me was "What do you think Captain Kirk Do. We used old Star Trek episodes for NCO professional development on leadership (yea I let them use some new ones too...but only with protest). We'd study them for lessons to teach the troops and observations on leadership etc. We all communicated well after that and when we were asked to come up with a New Company Motto they Came up with.... The WWiCKeD Ones. Which came from the t-shirts they had made at one point for a Battalion Fun Run that said ..... WWCKD What Would Captain Kirk Do How's that for beeing a GEEK? DH-
