What if Dragon and Dungeon go online only?

So now that the CB is going online only, why not the Dungeon and Dragon magazines? It would serve the same purpose; prevent people from subbing for a month and then downloading everything in one sweep.

They aren't worth pirating, so its less of a big deal for WotC. [/snark]

Seems unlikely to me. The CB was always billed as a subscription model, vs content you actually receive in a format designed for you to store, print, etc. Until the online CB prevents you from printing your characters out, I can't forsee any possible approach that cuts off subscribers from downloadable Dragon and Dungeon magazine issues.

Now, I do imagine a goal of WotC is to make it so you only gain access to the issues for months in which you are actually a subscriber. (Possibly with some way to buy back issues.) But that would take a bit more of a robust subscription model than they really have right now, so I don't see it happening any time soon.

Yes, but CB wasn't something just one person could have. In my group, I'm the only one with the DDI subscription and everyone else downloads from my account and I used CB to manage my player's characters. This online thing means I can no longer do that.

Are you admitting that you broke the TOS for the CB by allowing others to download and use the CB from your account?

That was not the intent of the CB and your admission is one of the reasons they have chosen to move to the new CB.

But I paid for it! And that was the only way a lot of people in my group could access the updates! And why oh why did they give people five downloads a month then if we weren't allowed to do that?

Because it allowed you to lets say have it on your laptop and desktop. And if for some reason you had lost your current install say to a OS update or reboot you could update the CB again. And it even allowed for you to allow a minor child of yours to use the program.

It was never meant for a group of gamers to be cheap and have 1 person buy it and everyone use it.

As long as I can print my character I am fine with this move to web based. Its the way it should have been from the start

But that is what people do!

Anyway, this is hardly practical for me as we don't have a Net connection where we game and my home net connection is rather unreliable. WE have enough content, so we're fine with the system as it is. None of us like Essentials anyway.

Actually some people actually follow the rules.

Well to each their own. Good gaming to ya then

I think it's a bad model to charge one same rate for all of the DDI. There should be a full price for people who want the adventure tools and Dungeon so they can DM, and a lower price for folks who only want PC options from the books and Dragon. Even if it's illogical*, a lot of players would feel like they're "wasting money" if they buy a subscription that contains a lot of stuff they never use.

*Illogical like saying "I don't have cancer or cholera. Why should I pay this much for health insurance that covers cancer and cholera?"
