What if Making an AoO When Threatened Provoked?

Our DM challenges us hard, with lots of special attacks like Overrun, Trip, Disarm and such: after the earlier, devastating fights, we learded the hard way how funny can be a more chess-like approach despite a more classical "charge, nuke, heal" way.
