In a word 'twink'. Drizzt reminds me of the dozens, and I do mean dozens, of those socially retarded enthusiats (don't get me wrong, some of them are my friends) who like to talk about how cool there character is and go on and on for it for like hours whenever they find out you are a gamer. Back in the day, and I mean like way back in the day before I'd even heard of this RA Salvatore dude, invariably this character was one of two different types: a) A CE half-demon half-elf vampire fighter/thief/mage werebear. (Invariably followed by the declaration that alignment is too restraining and should be done away with.) or b) An angsty drow elf ranger (if not multiclassed) outcast with cat like grace and the ability to fight with two weapons at once and like 19's in all his stats. Both would provoke any role player worth his salt to just smile and nod, and then turn to his friend at the earliest oppurtunity and go 'What a twink!'. 'I can't believe his DM let him get away with that!' 'Elves can't be rangers!' 'Drow Elf isn't even a PC class! (before UA)/'Drow Elf PC's don't get thier racial bonus abilities! (after UA)'/'I can't believe the DM let him be Drow anyway!', 'Oh NO, not another one (after a few years of this)' And remember, back then, when you did away with class level limits and restrictions, essentially non-humans were getting all thier extra powers for free. So, the impetus was to play the race with the most powers the DM would let you get away with. Drow was HIGH HIGH HIGH on that list. CLEARLY, the player was just min/maxing as best he could and the rules be damned if they were going to get in the way of his ultimate killing machine. CLEARLY, the selection of Drow had NOTHING to do with wanting to explore some deep philosophical question (and man this shows in RAS's writting) and alot to do with having the biggest baddest character you could imagine. You got the feeling talking to these guys that some sort of weird ego masturbation was occuring in thier skull as they discussed thier character's (many rule breaking abilities) with you and you just wanted to run away as fast as possible. So, when I see Drizzt, I basically see him as RAS's twink character and all the stories about him as basically RAS being paid to ego masturbate. And for the record, Drizzt was never anything like an original idea. Sure there have been lots of clones, but Drizzt was himself a clone if only in the manner of thinking that created him (I'm not saying RAS copied someone else, but he might as well had).
