Now, I've actually run games in a single persistent fantasy world for 40 years, give or take, and I ASSURE you it isn't even nearly in the same realm of elaboration of history and various other elements. It probably has a lot more descriptions of towns, forests, roads, mountains, etc than 3rd Age M.E. but that's about it. I'm sure I lack the literary gifts of a Tolkien and it shows. None of us can hope to reach a fraction of the kind of depth of a Tolkien, so why not play to the strengths of the medium, and our own strengths in it? That's what I do.
