The vaasi for Dawning Star is the best part of Helios Rising IMO. They are insectoid, extremely paranoid (to the point of killing all other sapients), manipulate their own genome to create many servitor races and absolutely love the taste of their own blood (thus controlling their own population). The hivers for Traveller are pretty spiffy. They are pacifists who won a war by converting herbivores into carnivores. The herbivores in question are the k'kree- horse like people who exterminate all carnivores they discover. The hiver ability to socially adjust other species is unparalled and try to incorporate everyone into hiver society. Star*Drive has the gandercat. They were once a powerful species on their planet and have reverted to a non-technological state. No one has been able to discover why and it seems they do have a verbal history that includes that time. Primal Urge's Emerging Forms line has several races I think would make excellent alien species. The euqsam are plants that use dead bodies to move about. They look like wooden masks surrounded by tendrils. The rynoth are a external parasite that control their host through pain. They look like Small frog humanoids. The d'ah rien are psionic humanoid insects that try to spread peace and psionic knowledge. Cyndarim are evil jellyfish (the humanoid parts can be eliminated to make it more alien). They use an ability to change colors, octopus style, to control others. Zure are Small humanoids that are driven to discover technology and can "smell" it if nearby. And a few others. And hoops are mutant rabbits from Gamma World. Insane barbarian carnivores, they have the ability to convert metal to rubber with touch.
