I think because it all gels for me as a whole... very likely wrapped in a healthy dose of nostalgia. But...I watched the original the other day - the one I will always call "Star Wars" - for about the twelve-thousandth time. I watched the stupid little original cut they stuck on the special edition disks... I bought it FOR the stupid little original cut. You guys know what I mean? The original widescreen, but stuck into a letterbox back in the days of 4:3 TV and never fixed for modern widescreens, so even on HDTV it's either a tiny window, or kinda blurry if you expand it...But we watched it my son and I, killing time on New Year's Eve, and I asked him "Special Edition or Han Shoots First." And we watched this stupid little picture inside my nice TV... and (I actually spotted a new goof - new to me. I love when that happens)... OMG. The music, the mystique, the moment Obi-wan surrenders, Han saying "We're fine, we're all fine down here, thanks. How are you?" And that face he makes because he knows he's screwed up. And "Use the Force, Luke..." and Han coming back and shouting "You're all clear kid, now let's blow this thing and go home!" And the Death Star going FWOOOOOOOM And the medal scene, and ten year old me falling in love for the first time... And yes, the music all throughout, infecting the mood.It's... It's Star Wars, y'know? And even when I watch other movies. Even the bad ones that I hate, I still see Star Wars inside of them. Even when I rant (and I do rant) about certain changes and certain people selling out, and about dumbing it down for younger audiences, and about a zillion other things, I never stop watching them. Okay, sure, I fast forward though lots of some of them. But I watch them, and every time I do it's ten year old me, with me dad, and the X-Wings are so frickin' cool I just want to squee at them every time. And the Millenium Falcon? I love that ship! You just put that in a movie and I'll watch it.And then, this new trilogy, and Rey... Luke Skywalker was the hero of his age, and Rey is that for this age. I'm old and my children are grown, but seeing my daughter - big Star Wars fan, too - react to seeing such a strong role model that she could more easily relate to. Even at 27, watching her. And... also... watching it for the first time with her, and her boyfriend on the other side, and when Finn blows up a target and he's all "WOO! DID YOU SEE THAT???!" and me and her boyfriend both say "Don't get cocky!" like we'd been planning it (but we hadn't because it was the first time for all of us), and seeing her react to getting that in stereo from us. But also Finn and Po, best frickin' friends (and maybe more?) ever, from the first moment? I don't even care that I was basically watching Star Wars all over again. It was glorious and I was ten years old again, and man, I did not expect Rey to give such a beatdown in the very first movie of the series. And Daniel Craig... just hanging around so they stuck him in a Stormtrooper outfit for Rey to mind control? Brilliant.And then, when I get ready for a game, digging through all this lore, all the wonderful West End Games stuff. Playing KOTOR and the lore there, making my own, making my own alternates for games.So... It's frickin' Star Wars. And that's my favorite thing about it. And I'll nitpick it until the day I die, but I'll be watching it while I do. Or playing it. Or reading the sourcebooks for it...</blockquote>
