Since no one said it had to be D&D...I'll throw my hat in with a mention of a couple of Runequest scenarios. I honestly think the best "adventure" was Griffin Mountain. However, that's as much, or more, campaign mini-setting than adventure. So, I'm going with Apple Lane. I honestly feel that this was one of the iconic beginning adventures in any roleplaying game. It begins with a brief "growing up" scenario where players basically practice using the system to do such things as making attack rolls, using skills, etc. Nothing amazing from a design standpoint, but something a lot of games forget to do with new players. In the second scenario, the players get to investigate "Apple Lane" itself. It's not too large, so it doesn't overwhelm the players. However, there are a lot of colorful characters, especially the important ones for the scenario. The scenario basically focuses on protecting Gringle's pawnshop from a bandit gang. You know what they are after and mostly have the run of the building when the assault is taking place. That gives a lot of openings for creativity in planning. The assault is interesting, and every time I've run it, it's gone differently and was enjoyable. The final scenario introduces new players to the "dungeon crawl" style. Players get to dive into the Rainbow mounds. There are a lot of interesting creatures to interact with, and all the times I've run this, none of the sessions has gone the same way twice. Indeed, when 3E was first released, my second adventure in my campaign was an adaption of the "Assault on Gringle's Pawnshop." I changed things around a lot based on power level (Centaurs, for example, are a bit too much for 1st level PCs). Still, the basic elements were all there, and it was enjoyed by everyone.
