Ok this may not be what you are looking for. But . . . To throw off my players I made the Far realms not a horrible twisted reality. It was a plane that was featureless and flat where they walked on an almost liquid surface. You see the only reason things were so crazed is the Far Realm being far away and having physics that do not quite conform to our way of thinking or the prime materials drove them crazy. Beholders, aboleth and other things from the far realm are what they are is because they are too far away from a reality they can grasp. So they talked with a nice Beholder, who was Huge showing they get weaker, devolve and get smaller in the prime material. They dealt with Mind flayers who could be reasoned with and weren't hungry for brains the same way. etc. They did run into a Deva who had gone insane a good reason to fight a Good creature, finally they sent him back after he was trapped there. Of course this is when the daily wisdom saves started adding up to them potentially going insane and being trapped. They also ran into a ancient bronze dragon who was "Vacationing" there knowing not to stay too long. Just some ideas of doing things differently maybe. Hope it helps
