Whether you are normally a player or DM, the question is the same. I've been rereading chapter 1 of DMG II and thinking about the question of different play styles and wondered what you think your CHIEF motivations/interest is.

I'm the kind of player who really enjoys:
Accumulating Cool Powers: Getting another +3 to attack, +4 luck bonus to AC and the charming gaze.

Kicking Butt: Killing goblins by the hundreds, ogres by the dozens. Gorefest '07!

Brilliant Plan: Coming up with the foolproof infiltration plan and coordinating everyone in overcoming the BBEG.

Puzzle Solving: Figuring out what order to pull the levers in, beating the villain at chess, and baffling the sphinx.

Favorite Role: You have already found the perfect race or class or archetype, so that's what you play.

Supercoolness: You love nothing better than the accolades of NPCs and the awe of your fellows. You make this look good.

Story: You can't wait to find out what happens next - so you decide to make things happen.

Psychodrama: The best thing about roleplaying is exploring the inner-workings of PC's and NPC's minds - exploring what defines them as individuals - their joys and angst. No one should try to interfere with your vision.

Irresponsibility: In the real world, you have to toe the line, but in D&D you can rob, murder, and destroy with impunity - making this escapism at its best.

Exploration: To boldly go where no PC has gone before - to visit the psychic jungles of Torami and meet the fishspeakers of the Ka'ai and feel the warm, squishy mud of exotic lands between your toes.

Outlier: You want to do something different - if the rest of the group can't handle it, screw 'em! You're here to have fun. Your character concept is paramount and you don't mind playing a character others regard as useless or unplayable.

Lurker: You just come to play. Other people can do all that other stuff just as long as somebody tells you when to roll which dice.

Treasure Hunter: It's not about the bonuses for you - it's about the wealth - and you want more!

Whoo-hoo, first vote!

I like leveling and being able to do even more cool stuff. And the cool treasure, allthough story is pretty important to me too. But that might just be because I DM a lot.

I don't see "having fun" on the list of poll options. Therefore I choose not to vote. :D :p
The idea is that everybody who plays the game does so to have fun. The question is: "Which of the listed options does the best job of making the game fun for you?"

Outlier. I've used Prestidigitation to create poo stains in another PC's pants. I've played an orcish barbarian who once set himself on fire to keep a beetle swarm away. I'm not afraid to cause a little damage to do something wierd or to wreak fun on the game.

As a player, it's between solving plot and kicking butt. My Saga 1920s PC is a brawling private eye, just like I was aiming for.

As a GM, it's more about plotting. Kicking butt is easy when you control the CR values :)

I chose exploration... But not because I like exploring... lands. Rather, I love trying out all the different classes and races and feats and...

I am without a doubt Brilliant Planning.

I love it when a plan comes together.

However I rarely get satisfaction. Other players rarely like all of the planning involved and DMs don't like me bypassing the encounters planned or having very easy victories from one well placed move. Wish more players and DMs understood that line of thought.

1. Supercoolness
2. Brilliant Planning
3. Story

'Supercoolness' for me is more about the other PLAYERS considering something awesome, rather than NPCs. I certainly don't OBJECT to the adoration of NPCs, but if I pull off something so outrageous, so awesome, so OMGWTF!!1!1, the group remembers it years later - THAT is what I play for.

Also, one thing the list doesn't really capture is playing for OTHER players' supercool moments.

Brilliant planning and story are pretty self-explanatory.
