It's not at all unheard of for Windlass swords to snap off at the hilt.Getting a good sword in this day and age is a hassel.Anyhow.Another "real world" sword that I would compare to a DnD longsword is a chinese jian, often refered to as a Tai Chi sword, though they typicly do not have a crosspiece or quillions.
