SFRPGs... ah. SF was always my first love. Traveller was the first, and still has a special place in my heart. Classic was a great starting point, and the series reached its pinnacle with MegaTraveller, which had a task system that to this day is unmatched by any SFRPG. Almost everything after MT in the Traveller series (TNE, T4, GT) was a failure in most ways (I love Chris Foss' art in T4, but it couldn't salvage the game...) Most SFRPGs I played since were a pale shadow of Traveller. Star Frontiers was somewhat interesting, but somehow lacked the grandiosity of Traveller. It worked, it just never kept our interest as a group. d6 Star Wars had the advantage of being very easy to make characters for, but I loathed the dice pool system and in general, the system just did not stack up to better SFRPGs of the era. Shatterzone had promise, but felt rather hollow compared to Traveller in that is was missing most of the meat... and the chargen wasn't even as good as it's predescessor TORG. I tried spacemaster for a while. It had some promising bits too, but the accounting was too much for my players. Alternity had promise of being the next Traveller, but it was not to be. It had some odd points and was marketed poorly and finally killed by the decision to promote only a few core systems, and they chose SAGA (retch) over alternity to do Marvel. I tinkered with my own SF game for a while, but decided I liked playing games more than designing them. It was interesting though. Its system was sort of a cross between MegaTraveller's robust task system and James Bond 007's percentile method. d20 Star Wars was great, and we played it for a while. IMO, it was soooo much better than WEG SW. WEG SW feels rather "kiddy" to my by way of comparison. But alas, I think I am not as fond of the franchise as I once was, and my enthusiasm wanes. I have T20, and think it is a great book, but have not had a chance to run a campaign. I have this half baked idea of scrapping the Traveller Imperium setting and running a campaign based on the Master of Orion backdrop.
