I finished the final revisions on my novel on Tuesday, and now I'm looking for a publisher or agent (and if you want to help me with that, check out this thread - http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?t=238696), but I have another dilemma. What the heck do I write now? I've spent four years working on this thing. It feels weird not having a writing goal to push toward. I mean, I have small things I can work on -- plots for my campaign, D&D adventures, maybe a storyhour -- but I want a long term goal again. I mean, there's no rush. I can enjoy a bit of a break in my writing, play some video games without feeling guilty, and all that. But when I do start back up, what should I be working on? I want whatever I do next to not be traditional fantasy. If it looks like it could be a D&D setting, it's right out. I'm thinking of working on a near future magical realism love story occurring during nuclear war. Another option is a modern fantasy road trip to New Orleans, which would draw heavily from my 'Long Road' storyhour I posted on these boards. A far-out possibility is trying to start a webcomic. The vaguely-formed idea I have involves a Nazi U-Boat (with a Japanese ninja on board) time traveling through the Bermuda Triangle to the age of Pirates of the Caribbean. This idea resulted from two overlapping conversations -- one about ninjas vs. pirates, the other about how Nazis are like the best villains ever. Or I could try to consciously hone my craft by writing nothing long, and instead focusing on writing short stories, or poems, or haiku. So many options. Love and nukes, road trip, Nazis: Which do you like best?
