The disciples were sent out to find the cataclysmic scroll, in hopes of flooding the world with evil. The kobolds basically took over the abandoned temple for their own nasty purposes. As such, there were more kobolds inside getting comfy in the temple. Therefore, the term "abandoned temple" refers to the original inhabitants no longer using the space for the purpose it was built. Hope that clears it up.In short, our group of level ones didn't question why the kobolds were guarding a temple that clearly showed evidence of not belonging to them in the first place and had clearly fallen in disarray. Our mission was to find a clue as to the whereabouts and perhaps find who else was seeking this cataclysmic scroll.
