The books often have explanations that make a certain amount of sense but I think the bigger consideration was really more about balance and making choices feel different.  In terms of limits, I always assumed it was a balance issue for the most part. And I think you do see some truth to that when you look at how different the power levels can become under the much more open multi classing rules of 3E (which I think is one of the things that makes that edition sing, but it is also where you often see more power spikes and dips arising).</p></blockquote><p></p>
