my top 10 incompatible ways of playing: 10) random encounters: I don't mind a side trek here or there, but when it takes 5 game sessions with 2-3 fights per session to get from city A to the dungeon... just stop already. 9) power trip DMs: I hate hearing how much more realistic it is to run into unbeatable threats. Ok if once or twice over 10 levels you see things too big for you fine, but if My Paliden is suppose to choose to run from every other fight, that is no fun. 8) random character creation and leveling: I am the big strong fighter so I put my 15 (highest score) in str, and my 2 14's in COn and Wis. On the other hand the theif go an 18 dex, 16 Str and COn, and is stronger and healther then me, then at level 5 has more hp then me?!?!?!?!??! 7) player know how: Ok so every character auto knows fire beats trolls, and liches have phlactories... even worse when the PC in quastion is a 7 Int Barbarian with no know skills . As a player the DM requaring this is worse. (Real example: I rolled to search a room in 3.5, I had 5 pts higher then the next highest modfire, and roll a 19. I found nothing. the player with 15pts less then me rolled a 5 but said "I search every where, under the bed, take the rod out of the closet, look in it" and the DM said he found the portable hole in the closet full of treasure...I WAS PISSED 6) Dump Stat cha diplomats: related to 7. WHen a player who knows how to be diplomatic and bluff dumps cha and puts no training into social skills becuse he can RP it, then gets mad when someone else says "Can I use my skill focus dipomacy to handle this" 5) Non sense traps: So this is where the kobold live right, and every door is traped... how do they get around? 4) Non sense trasure: So the orc that used a great axe to hit me and wore leather armor has a +2 long sword and +3 chain shirt as treasure...:-S 3) ignoreing plot hooks: You know I just spent a week making up a dungeon full of drow...the last thing I want to hear is "Wait lets go north tot he dwarven lands" 2) DM PCs: I run 95% of the time, so I understand you may not get to play as much as you like. However don't make a spot lite stealing DMPC just to get to play. 1) Gaming the system and danceing around the board: OK, I get it, the best thing you could do is not provoke, but think about what your movement looks like. I get it the best weapon is X, but do all of your characters need to weild it? I get it X feat + Y feat are a great combo, but does it need to be all the time. play the game, but don't game it for the best ways all the time...
